Dillon Council #3563

CHARITY - UNITY - FRATERNITY

About Dillon Council #3563

Fifty plus years ago, a group of about forty men within three parishes in the Mount Pleasant and Elmhurst area, the church of the Blessed Sacrament, St Pius V, and St. Augustine agreed to band together to form the Reverend Jordan J. Dillon, O.P. Council #3563. Our first Chaplain was the Reverend Patrick J. Conaty, O.P., Prior of St Pius V Church. He was asked to pick a name for the council. The name chosen was a close friend who was President of Providence College in the early forties. In June, 1952, the Reverend Jordan J. Dillon O.P. Council received its charter and number #3563..

For over fifty plus years, the Reverend Jordan J. Dillon O.P. Council #3563 of the Knights of Columbus has performed our obligations to our Holy Mother Church and our Order. The Reverend Jordan J. Dillon O.P. Knights of Columbus will grow and prosper by adherence to our principles of the Knights of Columbus.

“CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY, PATRIOTISM”

The Reverend Jordan J. Dillon O.P. Council #3563 held its first meeting in the basement of the St. Pius V Church’s Priory. Our first Grand Knight was Paul Cummings. Membership increased and we outgrew the confines of the priory’s basement. The Christopher realty Corporation was formed to seek a location for the council home.

From the City of Providence the Christopher Realty Corporation purchased the Obadiah Brown property on “Violet Hill.” To the East and North was Triggs Golf Course; to the West we could look down the hill at the Manton and Fruit Hill section of Providence and North Providence. After an unfortunate fire to the clubhouse of Triggs Golf Course, the Christopher Realty Corporation re-sold the council’s home back to the City of Providence. We then became known as the nomads of Mount Pleasant, from Academy Ave. to Harold St.

In the early sixties the Christopher Realty Corporation purchased our current location. Our new council home was built and a dedication ceremony was held during a severe snowstorm in February, 1964. The presiding Grand Knight was William Babin. In 1964, during the reign of Grand Knight Amedeo C. Merola, we sponsored a youth group, the Columbian Squires. A few years later we also sponsored a Boy Scouts of America troop.

Let us not forget our “MEN IN BLACK.” We have been blessed over the years with the late Patrick J. Conaty O.P., the late James S. Murray O.P., Reverend Joseph A. Scordo O.P.. Reverend Stephen Carmody O.P., the late Monsignor William M. Delaney, the late Reverend Leon F. Maynard, Reverend Domenic Joseph Fields O.P., Reverend Albert Trudell O.P., Reverend John Ruiz Mayorga O.P., Reverend Hyacinth Cordel O.P., Reverend Thomas More Garrett O.P., Reverend Patrick Briscoe O.P. and our current Chaplain Reverend Dennis Keiton. With their interest and spiritual guidance we always follow the teaching of our Holy Mother Church.

From the rolls of the Reverend  Jordan J. Dillon O.P. Council #3563 of the Knights of Columbus, we have generated many public servants; a Governor, Supreme Court Justice, Attorney General, Mayor of the City of Providence, two Providence Council Presidents, State Senators, and Representatives.
